Ten-man Alloa determined to make title tough for themselves

Second Division Round-up

Alloa Athletic 1, Dumbarton 2

ALLOA are making it tough for themselves as they look to secure the Second Division Championship title. David Winters gave the Sons the lead in 33 minutes and five minutes later Alloa were left with an uphill task as David McClune was ordered off.

The ten men got back into it, however, and Andy Scott's penalty ten minutes into the second half levelled things.

Dumbarton, who have play-off aspirations, won it through Dennis Wyness' goal in 65 minutes but they are still second favourites for the last play-off slot.

Arbroath 1, Cowdenbeath 1

GARETH Wardlaw's goal with 14 minutes left means Arbroath could mathematically still be relegated after Cowdenbeath earned a 1-1 draw at Gayfield.

Keith Gibson put the Red Lichties ahead just before the break, but Wardlaw's goal was enough for a share of the spoils.

Brechin City 1, East Fife 0

BRECHIN bounced back from the midweek humiliation at the hands of Stirling Albion to beat Stevie Crawford's East Fife 1-0 at Glebe Park.

The only goal of the game came midway through the second half, from Kevin Byers.

The result gives City a four-point cushion on Dumbarton, and as the Angus side also have a game in hand, the final promotion play-off spot now looks to be theirs to lose.

Clyde 3, Peterhead 1

CLYDE continue to fight on with the almost impossible task of avoiding relegation by beating Peterhead 3-1 at Broadwood.

Clyde took the lead in nine seconds. The fastest goal in British football all season was scored by Willie Sawyers, as he lobbed John Bateman after the wind caused confusion in the Peterhead defence.

John Stewart made it 2-0 in the 11th minute.

Sawyers or Stewart could have made it 3-0, but after Sawyers hit the woodwork, Stewart missed the rebound.

Connor Gethans got Peterhead back into it in 65 minutes when he got on the end of a David Donald long throw, but Clyde deserved the points, and made them safe ten minutes later.

When Stewart was felled just outside the area, Alan Lithgow slotted home the resulting free kick with the aid of a deflection.

Stenhousemuir 1, Stirling Albion 3

STIRLING are still in with a shout of promotion after leaving it late to beat Stenhousemuir 3-1 at Ochilview. Andy Graham's third goal in four games gave the visitors a 20th minute lead, held until just after the hour mark when Iain Diack made it 1-1.

With two games in hand on top-of-the-table Alloa, Stirling still needed points in the bag and they came through two late goals. First, Ross Forsyth found the net with eight minutes to go and Ian Russell settled their nerves when he added number three two minutes later.
