Ten goals - all Toll's

Tollcross THISTLE turned on the style to stun West Pilton Albion 10-0 and take the Lothian Edinburgh Amateur FA Lothian West league title with a game to spare.

The champagne was flowing at Saughton 3G as Tollcross outclassed their North Edinburgh counterparts throughout to take the title in their penultimate game, scoring five goals either side of half-time.

A first-half hat trick by Stewart O'Neill set Tollcross on their way and the goals continued to flow with Steven Bell and Greg Hogarth both bagging a brace along with strikes from Chris Bain, Steven Moncur and Robbie Simpson.

It took Tollcross just two minutes to get ahead as O'Neill got his first with a delightful curved shot from the edge of the area. It was shortly after this that West Pilton got their only glimpse of goal as Darren Brammer crossed to John Kane to hit a volley inches over the bar from 20 yards out.

However, Tollcross took the game by the scruff of the neck and ten minutes later they were 2-0 up with Alan Budge playing in Bain, who neatly flicked it on with the outside of his boot into the path of the on rushing Hogarth who drove into the Pilton box before passing the ball past the keeper to nestle into the far corner of the net.

Tollcross continued their attacking style of play with O'Neill and John Lawson controlling the midfield. And O'Neill was again on the scoreline as Lawson played his midfield partner through the defence to slot home a fierce shot for 3-0.

Two minutes later and some fine play by strikers Bain and Moncur made it 4-0, Moncur scoring from Bain's pass. Five minutes before half-time and O'Neill completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot as Hogarth was pushed in the box.

The second half was a mirror image of the first as Tollcross continued to penetrate the West Pilton defence with some slick and stylish passing moves. It was therefore no surprise that one of these moves led to a sixth goal for Alan McKay's team, thanks largely to the prowess of Bain.

Gary Fox picked the ball up on the half way line and played in captain Rees Allan, who had stayed up field from a previous attack. As he turned the defender he unselfishly played in Bain to tap into an empty net when he could easily have tried to score himself, 6-0.

With the game well and truly won with still half an hour to play Tollcross relaxed their approach, with fewer attacks, but that didn't stop them from continuing to score and the next goal came on the hour mark as substitute Robbie Simpson got in on the act. Hogarth chased down a meaningless ball on the by line and fired in a first-time cross to Bell whose shot was deflected into the path of Simpson to head into the corner of the net.

Two minutes later and it was 8-0 as Simpson turned provider for Bell to knock home.Simpson drove at the defence on the left hand side before sliding in a pass to Bell to flick past the keeper from ten yards out.

The onslaught wasn't over and Tollcross continued to hound them as Hogarth grabbed his second thanks to a clever one-two with Bain on the edge of the area. Hogarth started the move down the right and sent in a fierce pass to Bain who flicked it over the Pilton defence for the on rushing Hogarth to slot home from ten yards out.

The scoring finally did come to an end three minutes from time with Bell getting his rewards with a simple tap in after he latched onto a pass from Bain amid a ruck of defenders to tap past the keeper and end the game with the league title.

Tollcross coach Alan McKay couldn't contain his joy at a title win that sees his side promoted to Premier Division 2, the second tier in the LEAFA standings. He said: "It's amazing to see all the hard work the boys have put in every week over the last year get its rewards with the title trophy.

"We showed how good we are with some brilliant passing and some fantastic team play. To score ten goals is quite special when we could have easily taken our foot off the gas. Today is a celebration as we have won the league in style."
