Table tennis: Title decider shaping up to be a thriller

Edinburgh's table tennis league looks certain to be decided tonight when champions for the past three seasons, Murrayfield, host similarly undefeated North Merchiston.

Last October the team's drew but scoring differential means that, barring slip-ups in remaining fixtures, Murrayfield must win tonight to overhaul their rivals.

A key figure could be Murrayfield's Steven Fowler, who posted five-set wins over Merchiston pair Stewart Armitage and Willie Mabon in the National League while representing the Polmont-based Grange club on Saturday. Edinburgh League president Ken Benjamin said: "The previous match saw Murrayfield 2-0 up then North Merchiston 4-2. It was one of the best I have ever seen.

"Steven Fowler had a success rate of over 80 per cent last term and 16-year-old Colin Dalgleish is even younger but despite an angelic smile is fiercely competitive with a very good temperament."

Benjamin also expects Murrayfield's Artur Dzudzewicz and North Merchiston's Mabon, Armitage and David Atkins to all have a say in the outcome of tonight's tussle.
