Table tennis: Howieson causes upset

Edinburgh's Craig Howieson captured the Scottish men's table tennis singles title for the first time on a day of surprises at the Scottish Championships at Holyrood Sports Centre in Glasgow.

Howieson became only the third different player in 16 years to lift the title after the domination of Euan Walker and then Gavin Rumgay with a 4-2 final win over Glasgow teenager Sean Doherty. Doherty, who has been playing full-time in France, prevented Rumgay winning a fifth title in a row with a shock 3-1 quarter-final win. He then booked his final place with a 3-2 win over Scottish international Niall Cameron in the semi-finals.

But Howieson managed to hold his nerve to win the final.
