Swimming: Warrender duo sharp for Steel City

CITY swimmers Dan Wallace and Jennifer Dobson are looking forward to more success this summer after helping Warrender to reign supreme at the recent East of Scotland District Championships.

The famous Edinburgh Club won the overall title for the 11th year in a row and Wallace was the leading boy at over-16 level while Dobson claimed the award in the girls' events.

Wallace will be in action again at the end of this month when he competes in the 200 metre and 400m individual medley and the 200m breaststroke at the British Gas British Championships in Sheffield.

His target is to make the British team qualifying times for the European Junior Championships in Helsinki in July.

"Dan has been swimming really well and his best chance to make the European Junior team will be in the 400m medley," said Warrender coach, Laurel Bailey. "Jennifer's next big event will be the Scottish age-group Championships in April and her goal is to qualify for the ASA Youth Championships in Sheffield in August.

"Dan and Jennifer are both supported by the East of Scotland Institute of Sport and both have huge promise."

Another four Warrender swimmers will be joining Wallace for the British Championships from 29 March – 3 April. Lewis Smith, who competed for GB at last year's World Championships, will be out to strike gold in the 400m medley. Craig McNally will be taking part in the three backstroke events and, just 15, Craig Benson is another of Warrender's up and coming youngsters.

Completing the quintet travelling to Sheffield is Scott Quin, who has slight learning disabilities and will be one of the stars of the S14 Class. The Championships are the first chance for Scots to make their mark in the build-up to the Commonwealth games in New Delhi in October.
