Swimming: Student takes 50m breaststroke title in Manchester

Edinburgh UNIVERSITY'S Kathryn Johnstone won the 50m breaststroke on the final day of the British Gas Championships in Manchester, but there was disappointment for Warrender's Lewis Smith at a meet that doubled as the World Championship trials.

Smith, who made his World Championship debut in Rome two years ago, was second fastest qualifier in the 400m individual medley, but could only finish fourth in 4:18.80.

The 22-year-old's goal is an Olympic Games debut in London next year, but he trailed home behind English rivals Roberto Pavoni (4:13.37), Joe Roebuck (4:14.02) and Thomas Haffield (4:17.56).

Johnstone, who swam for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games, showed she is a real sprint specialist by winning the one length event in 32.47. But the 50m breaststroke is not part of the Olympic programme and she and coach Chris Jones will now be working on a step up to 100m.

Scotland's Hannah Miley saved the best for last when she completed a golden double with victory in her favourite 400m individual medley. Winner of the 200m medley, the Inverurie 21-year-old will now compete for GB in two events at the World Championship in Shanghai this summer.

The reigning European and Commonwealth Games Champion in the 400m medley, Miley completely outclassed the field in the final race of the Championships and took the gold in 4:39.12. "It's very hard to swim in your best event at the end of a long week," she admitted.

"But it's nice to go out on a high and qualify for the World Championships in two events."

On the final day, there was also a silver medal for Craig McNally (25.92) in the men's 50m backstroke.

Michael Jamieson, the former City of Edinburgh swimmer, joined Miley as a double winner.

The Glasgow-born 22-year-old, who trains in Bath, will get to compete in both the 10m and 200m breaststroke when he makes his first appearance at a World Championship.
