Swimming: Robbie Renwick ready to tackle world's best after striking Glasgow gold

CITY of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick claimed his first gold medal of this week's Scottish Gas National Championships with a victory in the 400m freestyle at Tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow.

The Commonwealth Games 200m Champion had a slightly disappointing start to this year when he missed out on the first round of World Championship trials in Manchester in March. But he qualified for Shanghai at the second time of asking at the ASA National Championships in Sheffield and reckons he is now ready to hit form at just the right time. "I had a few niggling injuries around the time of the Manchester trials but I am really pleased with how things have gone over the past few weeks," he said after posting a time of 3:52.03 that secured a close victory over Warrender's Lewis Smith (3:52.57).

"I'm excited about getting out to Shanghai and taking on the world's best. I've still got another week of hard training and then I'll begin to rest up just before we go out to the World Championship training camp in Japan on July 12."

Spain's Mireia Belmonte won the 200m individual medley, but didn't get the chance of revenge over Hannah Miley. The Scot beat the World No 1 to win the 400m medley on Thursday but, with her work done, she then headed back to Inverurie.

"I was really happy with my 400m swim but decided it was better to go home and keep up the training rather than stay in Glasgow," Miley explained.

Belmonte won the 200m in 2:13.87 and it was one of Miley's Garioch training companions, Emily Jones, who took the silver medal in 2:18.34. Rebecca Adlington claimed her second title of the Championships with a straightforward victory in the 800m freestyle. She had won the 200m on Thursday and the longer race - one of her two Olympic gold medal events - completed the English swimmer's competitive countdown to the World Championships. The 22-year-old won in 8:23.46 and it was Belmonte who took the silver in 8:30.94. The first Scot was bronze medallist Megan Gilchrist in 8:38.96.

"A lot of our youth swimmers from Nottingham came up this week and I thought I would join them for a couple of swims before Shanghai," said Adlington. She did suffer a bit of a scare when her training was hampered by some bronchial problems in the spring. "I'm fine now," she continued. "I'm looking forward to the worlds but it's going to be tough. It is an important part of the long-term goal of next year's Olympic Games. London 2012 is the priority."

In the 200m butterfly, Edinburgh University's Iain MacMillan scored an impressive victory over Andrew Mayor, who competed for Scotland at last year's Commonwealth Games. MacMillan won by over a second in 1:58.89.

Douglas Scott, a winner at the British Championships in March, also struck gold. The East Kilbride youngster won the 50m breaststroke in 28.89.spare page
