Swimming: No let-up for Fraser as city swimmer takes on World

EDINBURGH swimmer Sean Fraser is adamant there will be no holding back at the BT Paralympic World Cup this weekend despite the World Championships being less than three months away.

The 20-year-old will swim in a host of events in Eindhoven in August after hitting the qualifying standards at last month's British Gas International Disability Championships in Sheffield.

Fraser will get a sneak preview of what to expect at this weekend's World Cup in Manchester with America, Australia and a host of European nations among those attending.

And Fraser – who will swim in the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke – said: "We have obviously got a World Championships coming up this summer but the World Cup is a massive event.

"I obviously want to win both the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke but there is never a guarantee because anyone can rock up and do well because everyone is working hard."

Fraser – who swims for the Warrender club and won three bronze medals at last year's European Championships – has been training in Spain.

He added: "It was a lot of hard work in Spain but I should be in perfect shape for the World Cup because I have literally just got back in time for it.

"I should swim well and I really want to because there is a home crowd and it is such a good event to go to."

Fraser is joined at the World Cup, which is now in its sixth year, by Edinburgh athlete Libby Clegg. The sprinter was due to race over 100m and 200m today).

The 20-year-old will be aiming to defend the 100m title she won 12 months ago while also bidding to improve on the bronze she claimed in the 200m.
