Swimming: Miley doubles up in medley as McClatchey makes relay

The 22-year-old World Championships silver medallist had already shown she will be a major contender with a terrific time in winning her favourite 400m individual medley on Saturday and she doubled up with a winning time of 2:10.77 over the shorter distance.

“I knew this was going to be a big race,” said the Garioch swimmer after her one-second win over Sophie Allen. “This is the sixth time I’ve won both medleys at the British Championships and that makes me feel very old.”

In the 200m freestyle, Scot Caitlin McClatchey, the two-time Olympian, was quickest after the semi-finals in 1:57.45, but her time in the final was a slightly slower 1:58.07 and she had to settle for silver behind Sheffield’s Rebecca Turner, who clocked 1:57.65.

Unfortunately, McClatchey’s final time was not good enough to make the Olympic individual event – she had to break 1:58 – but she is almost certainly guaranteed selection for the 4 x 200m freestyle relay in which Team GB will carry medal expectations. “It’s a little disappointing to swim slower tonight,” admitted the 26-year-old Loughborough-based Scot. “But I’m pleased to be in the team and it should be a very strong relay squad.”

In the 200m breaststroke, Glasgow-born Jamieson, fifth in last year’s World Championships, led after the semi-finals of the 200m breaststroke in 2:11.47, with Edinburgh’s Kris Gilchrist, the 2008 Olympian, making it as third fastest in 2:13.22.

Warrender’s Craig Benson, the 17-year-old shock qualifier in the 100m on Sunday, made it to the semis but failed to make it into another final with a time of 2:15.67.

In the 100m freestyle semi-finals, City of Glasgow’s Robbie Renwick, winner of the 200m and 400m, showed the confidence of having Olympic selection in the bag when he emerged as the second-fastest qualifier for tonight’s final.
