Swimming: Michael Jamieson's pools double

Michael Jamieson ended his competitive preparation for the World Championships by completing a breaststroke double at the Scottish Gas National Championships at Tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow yesterday.

The Bath-based 22-year-old, one of seven Scots in the British team for the World Championships which begin in Shanghai three weeks today, had won his favourite 200m breaststroke on Thursday and he added the 100m title in 1min 2.89sec.

"I'm delighted to get the two golds," said the Glasgow-born Jamieson. "This week was a case of hammering in the final nail before the worlds and it's gone exactly to plan. I was really stinging towards the end of the race today but now I'm looking forward to tapering my training.

"We go to Japan for a pre-worlds training camp on 12 July. Then it is on to China, and I would love to get a medal out there. At the very least I want to make the final.

"History suggests that I need to be right up there with the very best this summer if I want to go on and challenge at the London Olympics. They are only a year away and so it is so important to make a mark."

Douglas Scott (South Lanarkshire), the winner of the 50m breaststroke, took the silver behind Jamieson in 1:03.32 with Andrew Willis (Bracknell) third.

Richard Shafers (Edinburgh University) enjoyed a career highlight with victory and a Scottish record in the 50m freestyle. He clocked 22.63 and outpaced Spain's Rafael Munoz's 22.91 with Stirling's Jak Scott coming third in 23.57.

Warrender's Lewis Smith competed at the World Championships in Rome two years ago, and was unlucky and extremely disappointed to miss out this time round. He did win the 400m individual medley at last month's ASA National Championships – but the two places in the team had already been sealed at the first round of GB trials in March. But having come a close second to Robbie Renwick in the 400m freestyle on Friday, Smith won the 200m individual medley and the 800m freestyle – a new event for him – and is already looking ahead to London 2012.

"I'm pleased with my times this week and I feel I am swimming so much better since I went back to my former coach, Ian Wright," said Smith. His time in the 800m freestyle was a personal best 8:04.75.

Spain's Mireia Belmonte is ranked No.1 in the world in the 400m medley but she suffered a significant defeat from Scotland's Hannah Miley in her favourite event on the opening day.

She bounced back to win the 200m medley in Miley's absence on Friday and was in a class of her own in the 200m butterfly, winning in 2:08.14.
