Swimming: Lewis Smith delivers silver service in Sheffield

In the closest race of the night, Warrender swimmer Lewis Smith came away with a silver medal in the 400 metres individual medley at the British Gas ASA National Championships at the Ponds Forge Pool in Sheffield.

Sheffield’s own Matthew Johnson just edged out the Scot in 4:18.28 – Smith touched in 4:18.33 for the silver medal.

Euan Inglis (Edinburgh University) claimed a bronze medal, in the 50m breaststroke. David Broady (Gloucester) won the event in 28.97 with the Scottish teenager third in 29.65.

Whitburn’s Megan Gilchtist also snatched a bronze in the 800m freestyle behind Rebecca Adlington, who will be defending the 400m and 800m at next month’s Olympic Games in London.

Adlington won the longer event in 8:19.03 with the Swansea-based Gilchrist finishing third in 8:39.24.

Corrie Scott (Edinburgh University) and Craig McNally (Warrender) both just missed out on medals on the penultimate day of the Championships. Scott was fourth in 1:09.41 in the 100m breaststroke and McNally was fourth in the 100m backstroke in 55.45.
