Swimming: Legend Wilkie to dip in at Warrender club bash

David Wilkie, the Olympic gold medallist and the club's most famous member, is to help Warrender launch a Hall of Fame as the special guest at a Memorabilia Evening in Edinburgh at the end of this month.

Wilkie, who won the 200m breaststroke at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and was recently inducted into the new Scottish Swimming Hall of Fame, will be joining the get together at Stewart's Melville's clubhouse at Inverleith on Friday, October 22.

The hope is to gather photographs and other memorabilia covering Warrender's long history and the aim is to have the Hall of Fame and other displays in place in time for the 125th anniversary in 2013. The Capital club had three swimmers taking part in the Delhi Commonwealth Games - Lewis Smith, Craig McNally and Sean Fraser.

The evening with Wilkie will include films of his career highlights and there will be a brainstorming session hosted by former coach Ian Wright. Wilkie will be joined in the group by other noted Warrender swimmers, covering the last 55 years of the club's history Jim Hill, Frances Smith, Mike Peyrebrune and David Leith.

The "Warrender with Wilkie" evening will take place from 7.30pm-11pm and tickets will cost 10, including a buffet supper.
