Swimming: Jamieson sets himself up for breaststroke double

Michael JAMIESON and Kris Gilchrist, the two former City of Edinburgh swimmers, continued their rivalry when they both qualified for tonight's final of the 200m breaststroke at the British Gas Championships in Manchester.

Jamieson, 22, has already qualified for the World Championship by winning the 100m on Sunday and he set himself up for a breaststroke double by swimming the fastest qualifying time in last night's semi- finals of the 200m event in 2:13.22, the title holder and Commonwealth Games Champion comfortably beating Gilchrist's 2:15.69.

"I wasn't sure whether to go for it or hang back, and I ended up doing a bit of both," said Glasgow-born Jamieson, who trains alongside Gilchrist in Bath.

"It's going to be close. There are a lot of fast guys chasing the two World Championship slots."

Gilchrist shrugged off his slightly disappointing time. "I'm happy with that, all I wanted to do was get through to the final."

Commonwealth champion James Goddard made sure of his selection for the World Championships when he just held off Joe Roebuck to win the 200m individual medley, while Warrender's Lewis Smith, who hopes to book his ticket to Shanghai on Saturday, took sixth place in 2:03.95, Roebuck clocked 1:58.28 and just made it on the final touch from Roebuck's 1:58.22.

Edinburgh University's Kerry Buchan, who claimed a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke, set herself up for another podium position by finishing third fastest in the semi-finals of the 200m event. Stacey Tadd, the 100m champion, was quickest in 2:30.70 with Buchan on 2:32.37. Another Scot, Hannah Miley, qualified in fourth place.
