Swimming: Gilchrist and Smith seek to Forge ahead in Sheffield

The Edinburgh pair of Kris Gilchrist and Lewis Smith are among the leading Scots taking part in the British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield which start today, the final selection event for the World Championships in Shanghai next month.

Michael Jamieson, the former City of Edinburgh swimmer, and Hannah Miley are two Scots already in the GB team for China, and Gilchrist would love to make it a tartan double in the men's breaststroke events.

The 27-year-old was just edged out for victory by Jamieson in the 100m breaststroke at the first round of World trials at the British Championships in March.

But the 2008 Olympian is aware that the March trials came after a recent change in training environment and he is now more settled at the British Intensive Training Centre in Bath.

"I just moved to Bath from Paris last November," said Gilchrist, who spent two years in France after the City of Edinburgh programme shut down after the last Olympics. "Now I'm training with Michael and it would be great to join him in the Shanghai team." Warrender's Smith, a medley specialist, made his GB senior debut at the last World Championships in Rome two years ago and is hoping to make his Olympic debut in London in 14 months' time.

Robbie Renwick just missed out on selection in the 200m and 400m freestyle at the first round of trials in Manchester in March, but he is hoping to make amends at Ponds Forge.
