Swimming: Fifth place for Jamieson

MICHAEL JAMIESON couldn't continue Britain's medal rush on day six of the World Championships at Shanghai's Oriental Sports Centre - settling for fifth in the 200m breaststroke final.

The 22-year-old had his eyes on sneaking a bronze medal, having qualified for the final as the sixth fastest. Reigning champion Daniel Gyurta and Japan's Kosuke Kitajima tussled for gold, with the former prevailing, but Jamieson couldn't muscle his way into third. That was occupied by German Christian Vom Lehn with Jamieson over one-and-a-half seconds down after touching home in a time of 2:10.67 minutes. "The time is not where I want to be because I believe I am capable of swimming sub-2:10," said Jamieson. "I've been going 2:10 and 2:11 for just over two years now so I feel I'm due a drop soon but I've put myself in the frame for next year now being in the top eight."

The British 4x200m freestyle relay quartet of Ross Davenport, Robbie Renwick, David Carry and Jak Scott, meanwhile, were never expected to medal but battled valiantly to sixth in 7:10.84.
