Swimming: Double for Hannah Miley as she ends tough week on high

HANNAH Miley was able to state with satisfaction "job done" after she ended eight tough days of competition with a comprehensive victory in her favourite 400 metre individual medley at the British Gas Championships at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

After pushing herself through 17 races, the 21-year-old Scot came away with a two gold medals - she also won the 200m medley the previous Sunday - selection for the World Championships in Shanghai in August and the confirmation that her preparation for next year's Olympics in London are right on track.

The reigning European and Commonwealth Games Champion in the 400m medley, Miley was a class apart, winning by more than five seconds in 4:39.12. Trailing after her weakest butterfly leg, she eased into the lead on the backstroke and the rest were left to chase second place. That went to Loughborough's Kate Hutchinson in 4:46.55.

Miley reached six finals in an astonishing show of stamina. "It is very hard to swim in your best event at the end of a long week," she admitted. "But that's what I came here to do, to train hard and to race hard so that when I do rest and do the one to three races at World Championships or Olympic Games, then it makes it so much easier. It's really nice to go out on a high and qualify for Shanghai in two events."

Michael Jamieson, a double gold medallist in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, was the other Scot to clinch his selection for individual events in Shanghai, while Robbie Renwick (400m freestyle), Douglas Scott and Kathryn Johnstone, both in the 50m breaststroke, were the other Scottish winners.

At 22, Jamieson is running into form at a significant time, He claimed the Commonwealth Games silver medal in the 200m breaststroke in Delhi in October, and is hoping to make another podium on his world debut in Shanghai.

In other events, David Davies won the 1,500m freestyle as a total of 24 swimmers sealed their place in the GB team, but the former world 400m freestyle record holder Jo Jackson and European double backstroke medallist Lizzie Simmonds must try again at the ASA National Championships in Sheffield in June.
