Swimming: City swimmers chase gold

WARRENDER'S Lewis Smith and Paris-based Kris Gilchrist are the two Edinburgh swimmers chasing gold at the British Gas Championships which start today in Sheffield.

Smith, a student at Stirling University, made a breakthrough last year by making the GB Team for the World Championships in Rome and he will be seeking medals in both the 200m and 400m individual medley.

Gilchrist, formerly with the City of Edinburgh Club, is also a GB team member and his main events are the 100m breaststroke in the second day of finals tomorrow and then the 200m on Saturday.

Inverurie's Hannah Miley will be a Scot in daily action as she chases seven titles. Today she opens by defending the 200m individual medley – she broke the European record last year.

The 20-year-old was in top form over the winter season, winning the 400m individual medley at the European short-course Championships in Istanbul before successfully defending ten titles at the Scottish Championships at Tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow in January.

But this is the start of the all-important long-course season with the European Championships in Budapest in August and the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October the main goals.
