Swimming: Adlington leaves Scots in her wake

REBECCA ADLINGTON, Olympic champion over the 400m and 800m freestyle, showed a nice turn of pace to win the 200m freestyle on the fourth day of the British Gas Championships in Manchester.

Winner of the 400m event on Saturday, the 22-year-old claimed her second gold of the Championships with a time of 1:58.90 and just snatched the title from Jaz Carlin of Wales (1:59.03).

Hannah Miley, who has already qualified for the World Championships in Shanghai this summer with her victory in the 200m individual medley, was sixth in 1:59.80, while fellow Scot Caitlin McClatchey, on her way back from illness, was eighth in 2:00.60.

East Kilbride's Douglas Scott became the fourth Scot to win a title when he claimed the 50m breaststroke. The teenager clocked 28.74 seconds and finished ahead of Stockport's Russell Smith (28.81) with Cockermouth's Craig Elliott taking the bronze in 28.95.

In the 200m butterfly final, Warrender's Lewis Smith (2:01.07) was the best of the Scots in sixth place. England's Michael Rock won in 1:56.31 with the former City of Edinburgh swimmer, Iain MacMillan, in seventh spot in 2:01.11.

Smith's main event is the 400m individual medley on Saturday, but he will hope to warm up in style this evening in the 200m final. He was fifth fastest from the semi-finals with a time of 2:03.59.
