Students pass early test

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY and Heriot-Watt University did the Capital proud when their footballers won their respective British Universities Championship games to qualify for the first round of this season's knock-out competition.

Heriot-Watt played Lancaster University at Riccarton and led comfortably 2-0 at the interval with goals from Chris Donnelly and Aaron James. A strike from Gavin Malin after the break sealed the Watt's progress.

Edinburgh University, meanwhile, travelled to meet York St John's and despite head coach Douglas Samuel having to reshuffle his resources because of the unavailability of some students, they won 2-0. James Craigen opened the scoring from the spot before a second-half strike from Jack Beecher ensured their progress.
