Students edge past youthful Tynecastle

Edinburgh University had the early pressure on a youthful looking Tynecastle back line which was marshalled well by former Dundee player Eddie Malone who went on to coast through the game.

Malone lost out just outside the box and Edinburgh Uni's Mike Grey went close to opening the scoring for the impressive students who started to control the game. In the second half, Tynecastle started with purpose but failed to take their chances and it was the students who took a deserved lead with an excellent strike from fully 25 yards out from Graeme Hunter.

They went on to increase their lead ten minutes later in 74 minutes, Danny Main getting on the end of a corner. Edinburgh started to control the game and were given a helping hand when a moment of frustration from Robbie Arthur saw him lash out after losing the ball in the centre of the park and resulted in a second yellow.

The hard-working Wayne McIntosh got one back from close range but it wasn't enough as Edinburgh University deserved the win and functioned a lot better than Tynecastle as a unit.

Edinburgh Uni's head coach Dougie Samuel said: "I'm delighted with the win against much-fancied Tynecastle. We competed well all over the park and pressured Tynecastle high up the pitch. This is another new team we have put together but we deserved the win and I am over the moon."
