Stuart Broad loses half of match fee after dissent against umpire

England bowler Stuart Broad has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee following an incident in the second one-day international against Sri Lanka on Friday.

Broad was found to have breached article 2.2.1 of the International Cricket Council's code of conduct which relates to "showing serious dissent at an umpire's decision".

The incident occurred in the final over of the Sri Lanka innings when Broad appealed for an lbw, which was turned down. As he left the field, Broad made "unacceptable and offensive remarks" to umpire Billy Bowden about the decision.

After the match, which England lost by 69 runs, Broad admitted the offence - removing the need for a formal hearing - and accepted the proposed sanction offered to him by match referee Alan Hurst.

"Accepting an umpire's decision is an essential feature of cricket and part of the game's unique spirit," said Hurst.

"Stuart's behaviour was not acceptable in any form of cricket, and as a well-established member of his country's national side and current captain of the Twenty20 international team, he must take responsibility for what he says and does."

Meanwhile, India have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the drawn second Test against West Indies, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said yesterday.

India were three overs short of their target after considering time allowances, the ICC said in a statement.

The Indian players were fined 30% of their match fees, while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was docked 60% as per ICC regulations.

No further hearing was required as India accepted the penalties without contest, the statement added.
