Strollers do just enough

CIVIL SERVICE STROLLERS lifted themselves into the top half of the Central Taxis Premier Division with a hard-fought 2-1 away win over Preston Athletic, writes KEITH ANDERSON.

Strollers opened the scoring after only 75 seconds through Ross Millar.

Preston regained their composure and equalised in the 19th minute when a John Kerr cross from the right to the back post was headed into the top corner by Kevin Haynes.

Strollers edged themselves ahead once more 15 minutes into the second half when an Alan Wilson corner picked out Liam Jack and his header back into the danger area was slammed in off the post by Chris Bain.

Keith Stewart, the Strollers joint manager, said: "The conditions did not help in what I thought was a scrappy game. We had the better possession in the second half and we just about did enough to win a competitive game."

In the First Division, Leith Athletic striker Steven Radzynski notched four goals as he helped his side defeat Gala Fairydean 5-1 at Netherdale. Mark Duthie also scored to keep Leith on the outer fringes of the promotion race.

Gretna 2008 were leading Vale of Leithen 2-0 early in the second half when the floodlights failed at Raydale Park and the referee had to abandon the game.

Heriot-Watt University against Edinburgh City was postponed.

Tonight, Lothian Thistle entertain Whitehill Welfare and Spartans await Edinburgh University at Ainslie Park.
