Fourth-placed Ayr, though, are upbeat, aware that an away win would keep them very much in title contention with only two games left .

Skipper Mark Renny said: "We played our best cricket of the season in defeating Arbroath last week, which is perfect preparation for what is essentially another cup final for us.

"We'll be missing bowlers Scott McElnea, who is injured and Phil Wilson and Calum McLaughlin, who are both working but we can bring back David Johnstone, Richie Borland and Ross Mitchell, which means we're batting right down to 11."

Ayr pro Michael Papps, with four centuries and 97 in his last five completed league innings, could hold the key.

Heriot's, meanwhile, having reclaimed top slot last week, will hope to dispose of seventh-placed Poloc at Goldenacre. Sean Weeraratna will captain the hosts in the absence of Steve Knox, who is attending a family wedding, and whose opening berth goes to Qasim Ashraf.

Heriot's also welcome back Chris Goddard at number 6 as well as bowlers Andre van Niekerk and Akshay Phale - and their lately missing heavy roller, which should ensure a firm surface on which free-scoring Adam Lockhart-Krause could prosper.

The Shawholm men, much encouraged by the return of Keith Sheridan and the contributions of recent recruits seamer James Blackburn and keeper Paul Flannigan, retain the side which won narrowly against Falkland.

Arbroath United lost top spot and fell to third last week and are determined to make amends at home to Stenhousemuir. The Lichties give a debut to opening bowler Matthew Hurst and welcome back Bryce Carnegie, and Sean Christie.

The Langloan men host Penicuik, bolstered by last week's win over Stirling County, which lifted them off the bottom for the first time this season.
