Stipe Pletikosa in on trial as Lennon eyes new keeper

Celtic manager Neil Lennon is to bring in Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa on trial, but admitted he remains keen to explore the possibility of bringing Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon to Parkhead when the Sunderland No 1 returns to fitness.

Lennon, who put his team through an open training session at AAMI Park yesterday as they prepare to face Melbourne Victory this morning, also stressed that he is comfortable with current goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska, but expressed a desire to pursue Gordon as a possible replacement for Fraser Forster, who rejoined Newcastle at the end of last season.

Gordon has a year left on his Sunderland deal and has been told he will have to win back the jersey when he returns from knee surgery.

Lennon has previously admitted the former Hearts player might be out of Celtic's price range, but said: "The problem with Gordon is he's not fit until October but we can still make an enquiry. He's a quality keeper and he's on our list."

Pletikosa is another option and he will train with Celtic following an unhappy loan spell with Harry Redknapp's Tottenham from Spartak Moscow.

The 32-year-old made just one Spurs appearance in his season at White Hart Lane. Lennon said: "Harry Redknapp was raving about Pletikosa so we'll have a look at him."

But Lennon added: "I'd have no qualms about starting the season with Lukasz. He's ready.

"It was a step up when (Artur) Boruc left and he didn't handle that as well as we would have liked. We've spoken to him and explained that was a disappointment to us but he looks a lot more assured and confident now and physically he is a lot better."

Celtic will be skippered in today's game by Georgios Samaras, who is returning to the city of his father's birth. The Greek international could have played for Australia, after his father lived and played there, but opted to represent his homeland.

The last time Samaras was in Australia to play football, he was treated like a star when Greece played the Socceroos ahead of the 2006 World Cup, and it was a similar story yesterday during training as he was mobbed by members of the Greek community.

"It feels like home," he said. "I have lots of family here, I visit them very often and I'm looking forward to the game. . . for the whole Greek community that are here."

Today's match concludes Celtic's Australian tour against one of the A-League's top clubs.

The Victory are the joint-most successful side in the league's short history alongside Sydney FC with two championships. The club has the biggest and most vocal support in the country so, when coupled with the passion of Celtic fans, the atmosphere inside AAMI Park should be electric.

The game against Celtic will be the first chance for Victory's new coach, Mehmet Durakovic, to show that he was the right man to replace former manager Ernie Merrick. Merrick, a Scot, successfully guided the club through its early years but they lost their way in the 2010/11 season and he was shown the door. Former youth team coach Durakovic took over the reigns for the last few Asian Champions League games and was handed the permanent job not long after. Victory fans are keen to see how the team's style has changed with the new coach.

Melbourne Victory have added a notable player to their squad in the past month. The signing of Dean Bouzanis from Liverpool is a step in the right direction for the club, as they look to build a team for the future. The goalkeeper, once described by Rafa Benitez as the best in the world for his age, is in with a chance of making his debut in the Celtic match.

For Scots, there is a more familiar name on the Victory team sheet. Former Hibs and Dundee United midfielder, Grant Brebner, is the team's vice-captain and one of the top players. The Scot has already made over 100 appearances for Melbourne and has established himself as a fans' favourite.
