Stevenson is king for a day

ORIENTEERING: Edinburgh’s Jamie Stevenson has jumped to No1 in the world rankings for the first time, but his reign is likely to be short lived.

With a total of 5296 points, Stevenson jumps from fifth place into the top slot, edging out Sweden’s Frederick Lowegren by 34 points.

However, last weekend, points gained in the 2001 world championships, weighted five per cent above normal ranking events, became a year old and dropped out of calculation.

But the weighted points from the World Games, where Stevenson took bronze, remain effective until tomorrow, when the Scot will lose 204 points from his total and suffer an inevitable slide down the world lists.
