Steven eyes his dream Hibs tie

SHAUN STEVEN, the Edinburgh City manager, almost crashed his car when he heard the news that his side – if they can beat Third Division team Montrose – had been paired with Hibs at Easter Road in the Active Nation Scottish Cup fifth round.

Unfortunately Wednesday's game failed a lunchtime pitch inspection today following Saturday's first postponement and the tie will now be rescheduled for Monday 18 January but that will do little to dampen Steven's enthusiasm.

"I had just picked up my daughter and was listening to the draw on the car radio," explained Steven. "I told her to be quiet when Hibs came out at home then when Edinburgh City or Montrose came out next I was banging on the steering wheel and shouting 'that's brilliant'. My daughter had to calm me down and tell me not to drive so erratically.

"We will be massive underdogs (against Montrose) but what an incentive this draw gives to everybody connected with Edinburgh City Football Club.

"I have been a Hibs supporter all of my life and as a youngster have watched them play on just about every ground in Scotland. My brother Tom also played with Hibs so it would be absolutely brilliant to get through against Montrose."

Edinburgh City, of course, have played and beaten Hibs in the Scottish Cup previously although it was 72 years ago, on 22 January 1938 when City triumphed 3-2 at Easter Road in front of a crowd of 8,920. On that day City's Peter Carruthers notched a double while Bobby Walker also netted.

Steven would just love the opportunity to lead his East of Scotland League semi-professional side out against Hibs in what he admits would be "a dream come true".

The game against Montrose, postponed on Saturday, has been rescheduled for Wednesday night at Meadowbank Stadium but with the surface still covered with snow the tie is likely to be postponed again with Monday 18 January earmarked as the next available date.
