Steven Davis commits to Rangers with five-year deal

Rangers have secured another key player on a long-term contract after midfielder Steven Davis signed on for five more years.

The Northern Ireland midfielder, who scored both goals in Rangers' 2-0 win over Blackpool last night, follows Allan McGregor and Steven Whittaker in committing himself to the club this summer. The 26-year-old had been entering the final year of his previous deal and his signature is a major boost for Rangers days before they begin the defence of their Clydesdale Bank Premier League title at home to Hearts.

Davis arrived at Ibrox on loan from Fulham in January 2008, helping the club reach the Uefa Cup final. The former Aston Villa midfielder signed for the club on a long-term basis months later and has won three consecutive SPL titles since.

Davis hopes the club can bring in new players now that they have settled his future. Speaking before the friendly against Blackpool last night, Davis said: "I'm delighted to get the deal signed and sealed and obviously I'm happy to commit my future to the club in the long term.

"Hopefully we can keep being successful for the length of the contract. I've signed for a long time and hopefully I can have my best years with the club. It was a big boost to see Allan and Steven sign up last week as they have been a big part of the success we've already had in the last couple of years.

"It was nice for me to be able to follow in their footsteps and hopefully we can now get a few new signings in as well."
