Steve McClaren and Gus Poyet linked to Rangers job

The vacant Rangers managerial position continues to attract big names with former England boss Steve McClaren and ex-Sunderland manager Gus Poyet linked to the job.

The Times have reported that McClaren, who was heavily linked with the Heart of Midlothian job after the exit of Ian Cathro, is the preferred candidate of the Ibrox side’s director of football Mark Allen.

The 56-year-old is currently a consultant with Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv after spells with Newcastle United, Derby County and Nottingham Forest.

His biggest successes came as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United when the club won the treble before he took the Middlesbrough job, leading them to League Cup victory and to the UEFA Cup final.

He would then win the Eredivise with Twente after his failure to qualify for Euro 2008 with England. He would have short spells with Wolfsburg and Twente again.

Meanwhile, Gus Poyet, who is keen on the job according to The Herald, is available having resigned from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua. He has previously managed Brighton, Sunderland, AEK Athens and Real Betis.
