Star survive sending-off to ease fears

Newtongrange produced an impressive display away to a strong side pushing hard for the Super League title. Their fourth league win on the bounce takes them further away from the relegation danger area.

Brian Duell gave Forfar West End the opener after 15 minutes but Stevie Thomson equalised minutes later. Aaron Somerville struck before half time to take the visitors in 2-1 up at the break.

In the second half, Newtongrange turned on the style. Somerville added a third before Scott McCulloch grabbed a fourth with half an hour to go.

The game almost turned on its head after McCulloch's goal. First he was brought down by a tackle from behind and, in the melee that followed, the linesman stated that McCulloch had thrown a punch. The referee then sent McCulloch off, incensing manager Graeme Armstrong so much that he too was sent off.

Kevin Garrick then scored Forfar's second with 15 minutes to go. He reduced Newtongrange's lead to a single goal when he scored another but the visitors held firm.

This victory takes Newtongrange up to ninth spot in the table.
