Star sparkle in shock win over league leaders Rose

Newtongrange climbed off the foot of the table with their second league win on the bounce.

Against the league leaders they dominated the opening half hour and should have opened their account on numerous occasions.

As the half-time whistle approached, though, it was Linlithgow who looked more like taking the lead. Star keeper Gary O'Connor showed his quality with a string of fine saves.

Just after the hour, Linlithgow made the breakthrough. Colin Strickland turned his marker in the box and drilled into the net. Their lead lasted only ten minutes. The Rose defence failed to run the ball out for a goal kick, allowing Gary Cherrie to flight over a super cross. Stuart Roseburgh rose at the back post to head home the equaliser.

Five minutes later and Newtongrange were in front. Stuart Roseburgh was brought down in the box by Virgili and Scott McCulloch blasted the spot kick home.

Linlithgow tried hard to get back into the game but O'Connor was up to anything that came his way.

To add to their woes Linlithgow had John Ward sent off for a reckless challenge at the death.
