Stadium fury of IAAF chief

IAAF president Lamine Diack has warned of serious damage to Britain's reputation as it emerged that an athletics legacy at the London 2012 stadium is not part of the criteria for deciding the future of the venue.

Diack said Britain's position in world sport will be "dead" if Tottenham's bid to take over the Olympic Stadium after 2012 is chosen over West Ham's.

The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) will today receive final submissions from Tottenham, who would scrap the athletics track, and West Ham, who would keep it, ahead of a likely decision next week.

However, none of the OPLC's criteria makes any mention of athletics. This, plus questions about a 40 million loan to West Ham by bid partners Newham Council, could make Spurs the front-runners.

If Spurs do win, Diack, head of the international athletics body since 1999, said: "They (the London Olympic bid] will have made a big lie to us."
