St Mirren's class of 1987 went on from cup glory to rags, riches, and beyond

ST MIRREN deployed 13 players at Hampden against Dundee United in the 1987 Scottish Cup final.

Each of them became legends that afternoon by winning the trophy against all the odds, although their paths since have been both varied and far-reaching, stretching from Iceland to Australia.

• CAMPBELL MONEY

After playing with St Mirren his entire career, and representing Scotland at B level, the goalkeeper managed Stranraer, Ayr United, Stenhousemuir and the Junior side Cumnock. Money is now Scottish Football Youth Initiative Development and Monitoring Co-ordinator with the SFA.

• TOMMY WILSON

Full-back moved to Dunfermline, Hearts, Kilmarnock and Dumbarton before joining the SFA as a youth coach. His current post is reserve coach at Rangers under Walter Smith.

• DEREK HAMILTON

Possibly the least recognised of the 1987 St Mirren team. After the final the defender moved on to play with Junior side Irvine Meadow before injury ended his career in 1988.

• BILLY ABERCROMBY

The hard-tackling midfielder joined Partick Thistle in 1988 before moving to Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and East Stirling. His career was ended by a serious knee injury but he still attends St Mirren matches as an avid follower of the club.

• DAVID WINNIE

Cultured defender who enjoyed a varied career playing for Aberdeen, Hearts, Canberra Cosmos in Australia and KR Reykjavik in Iceland. He is now out of football working as a sports law solicitor for Hammonds in London.

• NEIL COOPER

After hanging up his boots he became a youth coach at Aberdeen and later managed Forfar Athletic. Steve Paterson took him back to Pittodrie, where he is currently the club's under-19 coach and has helped nurture many of the current first-team squad.

• FRANK McGARVEY

Now works as a joiner in Glasgow and released a biography in 2008, in which he described the highs and lows of his career and revealed how he overcame a long-time gambling addiction.

• IAN FERGUSON

Moved to Rangers for 850,000 in 1988 and went on to win ten league titles as a mainstay of the club's Nine-in-a-row side. Played for Australian clubs Northern Spirit and Central Coast Mariners after emigrating Down Under with his family in 2002. Now manages North Queensland Fury.

• KENNY McDOWALL

Spent ten years as reserve coach at Celtic before crossing the city to join Rangers as first-team coach when Walter Smith returned to Ibrox as manager in 2007.

• BRIAN HAMILTON

His career peaked with St Mirren at Hampden in 1987 but he also represented Hibs and Hearts before joining Queen's Park as a youth coach.

• PAUL LAMBERT

Went on to a glittering career with Borussia Dortmund, where he won the Champions League, Celtic and Scotland. Presently flying high as manager of English League One leaders Norwich City.

• IAN CAMERON

Famously sat a final university exam on the morning of the 1987 final. Now first-team coach under Ian McCall at Partick Thistle.

• TONY FITZPATRICK

Managed St Mirren twice from 1988 to 1991 and from 1996 to 1998. His main priority now is his business, Kan-Do Sports Training and Development, working with adults and teenagers seeking to return to employment.
