St Andrews v Stirling for student honours

VARSITY GOLF: Top seeds Stirling and St Andrews meet in today’s final of the Scottish Universities’ Men’s Team Match-Play Championship – the third time in five years the pair have fought out the Mitchell Trophy.

In the first semi-final at Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth, St Andrews took a commanding 4-1 lead from the morning foursomes and went on to win 10-5 against Aberdeen, for whom Keith Shanks and Nick McAndrew produced solid singles performances.

On a windy but sunny day on the Moray Firth coast the all-Stirling clash in the other match went to form, although the second string gave a good account of themselves in losing the foursomes 3-2 before they were overrun in the singles.

The Fifers now stand in the way of Stirling making a clean sweep of the titles this week.
