Gary Harkins has taken his maverick ways to the extreme.

He did not even wait a week after telling me in an interview that he had retired from football because he had lost his appetite for the game before coming out of retirement to sign for another club.

“Ah but it’s not professional football,” explained Harkins last night. The talented 35-year-old midfielder was sent off from the bench in his last game for Stenhousemuir in February. He has now agreed to sign for the Airdrie-based side Gartcairn FC in the West of Scotland conference B – the seventh tier of Scottish football. It’s partly to help out a friend, former Partick Thistle team-mate and Gartcairn manager Willie Kinniburgh.

A couple of committee members at the club have helped Harkins find a job so he can continue playing part-time.

And that’s good news for those of us hoping to enjoy one last Harkins shimmy, one last nutmeg. All roads lead to MTC Park next season.
