After his debut campaign as Rangers manager was undermined by a rash of red cards, improving his squad’s disciplinary record became a priority for Steven Gerrard.

By and large he succeeded in addressing that issue last season, even curbing the wildest excesses of Alfredo Morelos
until the striker picked up a couple of red cards against Motherwell and Celtic in December. If Gerrard is to have the optimum opportunity to make it third time lucky in the Scottish Premiership and stop Celtic making it 10 in a row in 2020-21, then avoiding damaging suspensions to key players will be more crucial than ever.

So it must have been exasperating for Gerrard to witness Ryan Kent’s senseless dismissal for raising a hand to Lyon captain Marcelo in Thursday night’s friendly which could earn the winger a two-match domestic ban. Rangers need their £7 million winger to wise up.
