Speedway: Campbell happy to have reversed decision to quit

Edinburgh MONARCHS speedway boss John Campbell has reversed his decision to resign as co-promoter of the Capital speedway club. Campbell quit last October claiming he was “fed up with the sport and no longer wanted to trail out to Armadale every Friday”.

But after supporters rallied round to save Monarchs from closure, he has had a change of heart, and the news has been welcomed by the Monarchs board.

Campbell’s “resignation” was reported exclusively in the Evening News, but the chartered accountant explained: “In those early days back in October I thought I’d had enough of speedway.

“After 29 unbroken years as a promoter, it was time for a rest and to let someone else get on and do it instead. I had many messages of support at that time and I was grateful for them all.

“Some certainly had me very emotional. Some people said I couldn’t give up and to keep going into my 30th year.

“My fellow directors asked if I could help out with this and that, and I could have said ‘no’. But I agreed to help and the more I helped the more I got involved again.”

And Campbell revealed: “I have renewed my promoter’s licence for what will be my 30th season, and I’m pleased the club are in a better financial position than it has been for many years.

“I do enjoy being with the team and will continue to act as team manager for most of the away matches.”
