Speedway: Monarchs 'were on brink of folding'

CASH-STRAPPED Edinburgh Monarchs bosses yesterday admitted that they were within a whisper of closing the club.

Debts from this season are reported to have rocketed to around 40,000 despite winning the Premier League and reaching the final of the Knockout Cup.

The club have been baled out by directors who have brought out their wallets.

Accountant John Campbell, the club's co-promoter, admitted: "It was touch and go. The Directors talked about it for a long time."

Cost-conscious Campbell admitted that every cost was being looked at, and that includes riders fees.
