Speedway: Monarchs pay tribute to tragic Winkler
Winkler, 46, joined Monarchs in 1991 when the team were based at the city’s Powderhall Stadium, but despite enjoying success in his own country, the Australian struggled to adapt to UK circuits and was released before the end of the season.
It is believed Winkler reared and crashed into the safety fence and was hit by a following rider who tried to avoid him. Winkler, who tragically lost his parents earlier this year, leaves two daughters.
