Speedway: Legend Briggs rides again

FOUR-TIMES world speedway champion Barry Briggs will "ride" in the Scottish Open Championship, which opens Edinburgh Monarchs' 2010 season at Armadale on Friday, 19 March.

The 76-year-old New Zealander is raising money for Sport Relief and the Speedway Riders' Benevolent Fund, and has undertaken to ride a bike all over Britain this summer.

He is starting off at John O'Groats next week and Armadale will be his first port of call for the Scottish Open – a title he won at old Meadowbank in 1967.

Briggs rode at Wembley during the England v Egypt football friendly international last week and is hoping to visit as many tracks as he can before his fundraising effort finishes at the British Grand Prix at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on 10 July.

Briggs will also be joining Monarchs on their stand at the Scottish Motorcycle show at Ingliston over the weekend of 20-21 March.
