Speedway: Lawson may make U-turn

William LAWSON could be on the brink of performing a U-turn over his decision not to ride any speedway this season.

The Edinburgh Monarchs rider declared in December that he was taking a year out of the sport, feeling he was not equipped mechanically to cope with the introduction of new silencers for the 2011 campaign.

But Monarchs co-promoter Alex Harkess has revealed the Perthshire ace was scheduled to practice at Scunthorpe over the weekend raising hopes that he may still fill the remaining reserve berth Monarchs have vacant to complete their squad to defend their Premier League crown.

It's no secret that Monarchs are doing everything they can to persuade Lawson to re-sign knowing he could provide a points goldmine from the tail-end. Harkess said: "We are just a bit mixed up with William as he keeps giving out different signals.

"He tells us he has retired, but he has got an engine plus one of the new silencers and was intending to practise.

"We are giving him every opportunity to ride for us if he does indeed change his mind.

Harkess continued: "William has not made any official announcement that he has changed his mind, but I can't quite understand why you would want to undertake practice sessions if you were serious about retiring for a year."

However Monarchs are exploring other options should Lawson stick to his guns.
