Spaniard is flying after nine birdies

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano shot a scorching ten-under 61 to jump to a three-shot lead on 15 under after the second round of the rain-affected Singapore Open.

The Spaniard holed nine birdies and one eagle to race ahead of James Morrison of England and Italy’s Edoardo Molinari, who both had 68s to be tied at 12 under.

Play was suspended just as the third round began at about noon because of the threat of lightning. The rain continued throughout the afternoon meaning no more play was possible, and officials shortened the tournament to three rounds.

Fernandez-Castano, 31, said: “I’m thrilled. You don’t shoot ten under very often.”

Ernie Els shot a 66 to be at four under while Graeme McDowell’s 71 put him at three under and just inside the cut mark. Phil Mickelson had a 67 for four under.
