Sonians not satisfied despite whitewash

WATSONIANS took three points from their league clash with Edinburgh University last night, although they were far from satisfied with their performance in a 22-0 win over their lowly opponents.

Fielding a makeshift side and with two players competing in their first-ever competitive game of rugby, Watsonians struggled to take a stranglehold in a bad-tempered and at times, confrontational tie.

Jilly McCord gave the visitors a 5-0 lead at half-time, and it wasn’t until the final ten minutes of the second period that Watsonians wrapped up the points.

Lismore’s Leslie Lauder came into the Watsonians squad to ease their injury crisis and proved influential as she grabbed the second try.

After an injury scare prior to the national squad weekend last week, Mary Pat Tierney bounced back with a try and added to her tally by kicking the only conversion of the match.

Ali McLeod also made her mark on a game fuelled with dropped balls and basic mistakes, with her first try in her first start for Watsonians in the closing minutes.

The injured Sarah Mears, who watched the game from the sidelines, said: "We were missing players in important decision-making positions and seemed to lack any real leadership in the team."

Meanwhile, the cup competition comes to the fore tomorrow afternoon.

Second division table-toppers Lismore are play host to cup holders, Wanderers, and though the visitors are firm favourites to collect a victory, Lismore will know they are more than capable of causing an upset.

Yet to lose a game in their league and achieving an average score of 40 points a game so far, Lismore are no strangers to the sweet smell of success and will enjoy nothing better than to slay their giant opponents.

Watsonians’ gruelling weekend appears to have lessened somewhat.
