Sole Power delivers a 100-1 shock in Nunthorpe

SOLE Power supplied the biggest shocks of the Flat season by fending off hot Nunthorpe favourite Starspangledbanner for a 100-1 victory at York yesterday.

The three-year-old, whose only two previous successes had come on the all-weather at Dundalk, was always travelling well for Wayne Lordan as visored filly Rose Blossom set a scorching early gallop.

Starspangledbanner, sent off the 6-4 market leader, appeared caught out by the early pace of the race and, although he began to get going late in the day, Sole Power had already flown and passed the post with something to spare over Aidan O'Brien's charge.

Delighted winning trainer Edward Lynam said: "We always rated the horse. He's a very very fast horse, but he has been immature.

"We thought this race would suit him. I'm not saying we thought he'd win. His owner was keen to run and he knows a bit about form. He'll be a better horse next year.

"He's been disappointing since the Palace House, but they go too slow for him in the sprints in Ireland. He broke the track record at Dundalk and this is a lucky place for us, we've done well here before."

Lordan said: "It's hard for a three-year-old against older horses but they went very quick and he's picked up and done it very well, so it was good."

Earlier on the York card, Rio De La Plata secured his first Pattern-race success in almost three years with a taking display in the Group 3 Sky Bet Strensall Stakes.

Sent off at 7-1 to bounce back from a disappointing effort in softer conditions at Haydock, Saeed bin Suroor's five-year-old travelled strongly throughout in the hands of Frankie Dettori.

Hot favourite Rainbow Peak made good headway down the straight but Rio De Plata had enough in the tank to score by a cosy neck.

week but Measuring Time is taken to get the stable back on track at Sandown today.

Hannon suffered disappointment last weekend when Paco Boy was beaten in France while Martyr failed to shine as the favourite in the Ebor itself, but victory in the Alexis Catchpole Celebration Solario Stakes should offer a little consolation.

The six-year-old will be turning out again in the toteexacta Handicap just five days after claiming a close-up eighth in an ultra-competitive heat on the Knavesmire.

A 3lb rise in the weights for a win at Musselburgh earlier in the month seemed to anchor him a little at York but his claims were hardly enhanced when he met with a bit of trouble in the final two furlongs.

He was partnered by Jimmy Quinn that day but Rasaman is reunited with 3lb claimer Gary Bartley this time, effectively negating his rise in the weights.

Rasaman certainly seems to thrive over this five furlongs too and with

him being a horse who can handle a couple of quick races, he merits respect here.

Goldie can double up with North Central in the TurfTv Handicap. Although still a maiden after nine runs, the three-year-old is a consistent performer and despite his quiet ascent in the ratings, his

turn must surely come soon.
