Snooker: On cue to fly the Saltire

Paul Marinello, owner of Edinburgh's Locarno Snooker Club, will be a proud man on Saturday when five of his club players represent Scotland at the HIBSF Home International Snooker Series being held in Prestatyn, Wales.

Craig McGillivary, Ross Vallance, Robert Carlisle and Stuart Johnstone will all represent the senior team against some of the best players from England, Ireland and Wales in a week-long series of round-robin games.

Edinburgh's Lee Mein, 16, will play in the under-16 team.

Marinello said: "This is a remarkable achievement for the club and highlights the standard of play in the east of Scotland to have so many players in the team. All of the guys have played their way into the team and have been selected based on their rankings at the end of last season."

Michael Leslie (Bonnyrigg) will also captain the under-19 team and Greg Ritchie (Musselburgh) will play in the under-16 side alongside Scott Roarty (Bonnyrigg) and Ross Muir (Musselburgh). But, for Marinello, it is not only this he has to be proud of. For the last year he has also been instrumental in the creation of a new association for Snooker in Scotland.

Caledonian Snooker has now taken the lead in running events across Scotland and delivering the development of the game in this country.

Marinello said "It has been really hard work but we are making really good progress. We have professionals like Alan McManus right behind us. We have even managed to secure a couple of sponsors from Penicuik-based JMConservatories.co.uk and The Tayplay Group from Perth to sponsor our events this season. We have a full calendar of events this season at under-14s, under-16s, under-19s, Seniors, Masters and Ladies and will also be running Billiards events."
