Snooker: MacGillivray looks for lucky break against Vallance

Former snooker professional Craig MacGillivray of Edinburgh will be hoping to use all his years of experience at The Lucky Break Snooker Club in Clydebank this weekend as he bids to become the Scottish Amateur snooker champion for the first time.

In an all-Edinburgh final, MacGillivray, 38, who plays at the Locarno Snooker Club in Edinburgh, must overcome clubmate Ross Vallance on Sunday if he is going to get his hands on the coveted title.

McGillivray said: "I am really excited about the match. The national title is the one everyone wants to win. Ross and I know each other and get on well and it should be a good game."

However, with 500 going to the winner and an invitation to represent Scotland at the World Amateur Snooker Championship in China, the two players will put their friendship to one side for the duration of the match.

MacGillivray demonstrated that he had returned to form with a 5-0 whitewash of Scotland's No.?1 ranked player Scott Mackenzie (Glasgow) in the quarter finals before a 6-3 win over Ian Wells to secure his place in the final. Vallance was taken all the way to a black-ball game in a deciding-frame semi-final shoot-out before overcoming Cumbernauld's Mark Boyle 6-5, who beat Vallance in the 2009 final.

Musselburgh schoolboy Ross Muir is also in action, playing Clydebank's Joseph McLaren tomorrow in the final of the Under-16 championship and on Sunday against Perth's Scott Donaldson in the final of the Under-21 championship.
