SNCL: Grange to make plea for re-match after sacrificing fixture

PREMIERSHIP champions Grange will this week ask competition chiefs to "do the decent thing" and let them re-stage their cancelled clash with Greenock.

The club reckon they should be given special permission to play the game after agreeing to pull the plug yesterday in order to protect the international pitches at their Raeburn Place ground.

Skipper Sanjay Patel revealed conditions were playable, despite the monsoon that hit Edinburgh on Friday night.

But he explained: "Cricket Scotland were keen for us to call it off in case damage was done in the build up to the One Day International series with Sri Lanka and Ireland.

"We went along with that because we wanted to look at the bigger picture and realise that the image of the sport is what is most important in this situation.

"The ground should look at its best on a showcase occasion and there was a risk of that not being the case if we had played against Greenock.

"Though it does puzzle me why the league schedule gave us a home match so close to three internationals - it just doesn't give the groundstaff much of a chance."

Patel added: "The bottom line is that we definitely DO want to play this match and we will be asking the SNCL to give us the go ahead to rearrange it for later in the season.

"We have played ball with the authorities - so I would hope that they will do the decent thing and play ball with us."

Greenock skipper Ryan Begley said: "We were very disappointed when the match was called off so early and we will be happy to face Grange some other time if that is possible."
