Smith's ton gives East first-ever win

KYLE SMITH, a teenage batsman from Merchiston Castle, has made East cricket history with a century in the regional academy team's first-ever league victory.

In helping the Academy, introduced to the league as a composite side this season, win at Grange 2nds opener Smith attacked from the start of his innings of 101. The 'ton' was comprised in just 58 balls and included two sixes and 12 fours.

Principal support in a total of 333-5 came from fellow Merchistonian Patrick Baker who hit 47 from 69 balls in a first-wicket stand of 157. Subsequently Andrew Chalmers was bowled in the final over for 86 and Peter Ross finished on 66 not out. In response, the home side raced to 58 from 12 overs but eventually finished on 268 -7, some 67 runs short.

• GRANGE are scheduled to launch their Murgitroyd Masterton Trophy campaign with a home tie against Peebles County tonight. Elsewhere Carlton await Fauldhouse on Thursday.
