SLIDESHOW - Bo’ness are champions

Bo’ness United were crowned Super League champions on Wednesday after they hammmered Lochee United 5-1 at a rain-soaked Newtown Park.

The BUs won the major title, the third time in four years, with a game to spare having won 22 of their 29 games played so far.

Their final league game is tomorrow (Saturday) against Linlithgow at Prestonfield.

A jubilant Bo’ness boss Allan McGonigal said after their momentous season: ‘‘All the plaudits go to the players. The way they have been playing recently has been magical!

‘‘We lost only four games all season and even though there were times when we didn’t play well, we still managed to grind out results.

‘‘It is a great occasion for the players, the club, the fans and the town!’’

Looking ahead to their next two matches against rivals Linlithgow, McGonigal said: ‘‘The pressure is off us now, so the players can go out and 
enjoy themselves.

‘‘That does not mean we will not be taking the games seriously though as we want to win every game.’’

McGonigal said that despite being title favourites since mid-March it took to the second last game of the season to secure the title, adding: ‘‘We won it but if I had the budget that Linlithgow has, we would have been that far in front, the other teams would have needed binoculars to look for us in the league title race.’’
