SLGA want ‘sensible starting point’ for amalgamation

THE Scottish Ladies Golfing Association has warned that a “sensible starting point” is required before it will resume discussions about an amalgamation of the ruling amateur bodies in the home of golf.

Shona Malcolm, the SLGA chairman, delivered the message in a letter that has been sent out to clubs giving them an update on the proposal to form a single unified body with the Scottish Golf Union.

She wrote: “The SLGA remains committed to the principle of amalgamation in the best interests of Scottish golf, keeping clubs at the heart of the organisation, and awaits communication from the SGU on its suggestions on how matters could be progressed. Should these principles provide a sensible starting point, consideration will be given to resuming discussions on amalgamation.”

Earlier this year, the SLGA members voted overwhelmingly for the proposal, giving it 93 per cent backing after a period of consultation.

However, the SGU failed to get the 75 per cent it needed for the amalgamation to go through and it is now in discussions with the 16 Area associations in a bid to try to get a fresh proposal on the table early next year.

Both the SGU and SLGA are scheduled to hold their agms in January, when an update on the matter is expected to be delivered to members of each organisation.
