Sleeping giant West Lothian set to waken

WEST Lothian captain Andy Raven last night stressed his belief that the club are well on their way to shaking off their "dormant giants" tag.

The Boghall outfit were a force to be reckoned with less than a decade ago, and their skipper is hoping to turn the clock back.

Following their shock Scottish Cup win against Grange and then Saturday's emphatic eight-wicket home triumph over Renfrew, Raven said: "The batting is clicking at the moment, especially pro Kruger van Wyk who is in the form of his life.

"Bowling wise, there are still some little things to iron out, but once we stop the wides we will be able to blow away any team in this league.

"Kruger has had a massive influence in his three years with us. He has created a pool of eight juniors who now play Second XI every week – and six of whom are knocking on the door of the firsts.

"For the first time in many seasons we have a proper top-team squad and no struggle to find a team if one or two guys are unavailable."

Van Wyk was at his best to knock the stuffing out of Renfrew. He struck an unbeaten 114, combining in a sizzling stand with overseas amateur Jarrod Cookson (92no) after the visitors posted 229. Raven had been the top performer with the ball, snapping up four for 54.

Corstorphine's trait of inconsistency returned as they crashed to Weirs at home in a dramatic finish. Weirs needed 44 from the last four overs and got there with two balls to spare.

Veteran spinner Ziggy Young said: "We had five second teamers in our line-up and the combined age of our last four batsmen was 182.

We should never be underestimated when the old boys are playing."

Tom McBride hit 102 to steer title favourites Dumfries to glory over Freuchie. And there was a Paisley double over the capital as Ferguslie and Kelburne prevailed against SMRH and Imans Edinburgh respectively.
